TO SHEFFIELD FROM THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE

Dear Sheffield,

The story goes that you saved me from charlatans who would have had me

collapse

fall apart

crumble

break

who didn’t care about me.

But not you.

You sent over Sheffield folks.

You wrapped yourself around me with five times as much crucible steel wire - just in case.

You couldn’t take out the bad, so you gave me as much extra goodness as you could.

You protected me from gales and crashes and floods you knew only too well.

I’ve seen

strikes

demonstrations

wars

marriage proposals

marathons

governments and buildings tumble

provided safe passage on dangerous days

and the views

I think they come for the views, but

the views

from me

don’t include

me.

Isn’t it always the way?

It’s not like that for you, though.

I won’t keep you in suspense (see what I did there?)

They don’t give you a telegram from the queen here (we’re too independent for that).

But I did have a lovely centenary. Years ago now, and I can still remember it.

These Brooklyn folks know how to party.

They really care about me.

Like you.

I’ve sent you over some Brooklyn folks.

You’ve wrapped yourself around them.

You’ve saved them from charlatans who would have had them

collapse

fall apart

crumble

break

You couldn’t take out the bad, so you gave them as much extra goodness as you could.

They know that you’ve seen

strikes

demonstrations

wars

marriage proposals

marathons

governments and buildings tumble

provided safe passage on dangerous days

and the views

I think they stay for the views, but

Maybe one day, when they finish preparing you for floods you know only too well

the view

from you

could include

me.

With love,

The Brooklyn Bridge
